I’m pleased to hear from you, I came back less than six months ago and as you see I got a hotmail account that I mustn’t give to anybody. It’s all right, I don’t have any friends left. What’s this all about? It all seems very mysterious. And please don’t write to me using that illiterate grammar the young use. I want complete words, not u for you and that kind of thing.

I’m also pleased to know you’re alive. My list of friends has a lot of crosses on it. Tell me how you are: a) your love life; b) your financial situation; and c) do you think you’ll stay in the country? Whether I finally tell you what this is all about will depend on your answers. In the same order, my own answers are: a) I married a Croatian woman in ’86, the marriage lasted one child and four years, now I’m divorced and looking for a girlfriend on the Internet; b) fucked, even though I inherited my parents’ house and don’t have to pay rent. I’m unemployed, and when you’re a senior that isn’t a good situation to be in; c) I feel as if I’m just passing through and want to go back to Europe.

a) Similar situation, though my wife wasn’t Croatian, I married my old sweetheart, Matilde, we had a son who made me a grandfather, and she discovered French love. From the point of view of pure reason, emotionally I’m like the planks of a henhouse: covered in shit. Tell me what it’s like, looking for a girlfriend on the Internet; b) I’m a journalist, or rather I was, it’s been quite a while since I last wrote a line. I live in a fairly decent boarding house, and every day I go out to look for something without knowing what the hell it is I’m looking for, which makes it unlikely I’ll find it; c) I hadn’t thought about it, although I think I’d be happy to go north and live like an ageing hippie in San Pedro de Atacama. I hate Santiago.
